Nate is the name of the legendary first human wizard. It is said that on the first day of the First Age, the first newcomer to enter Port Town through Harbor Gate was Valen, soon to become God of the Underworld. The second, it is said, was Nate.

Nate was the first to seek the Staff of the Mage. Nate was the one who requested of the gods that magic should be difficult to obtain. For this his name is often cursed by the wizards and mages after him when it seems that this request was granted.
