Avan was a gnome magic user who taunted Thoreg, the leading Dwarf of Port Town and used Thoreg's own magic to make Thoreg follow him like a pet. Avan also used magic to make many identical twins of Thoreg.

Learning of this later, Thoreg's son Noreg vowed revenge, but did not know the name of the one who had mocked his father.
